CertBALM® Case Study Artificial Intelligence Policy‍ ‍

1. Introduction

This policy relates to the CertBALM® Case Study, undertaken by students as the final part of the CertBALM® qualification. The policy is to make students aware of the importance of submitting their own independent work for assessment and to remind students that all work submitted must be their own. The use of AI, in any context, will result in disqualification from the assessment session and may lead to disqualification from the CertBALM® qualification overall (at the discretion of the ALMA Education Director).

2. What is AI use and what are the risks of using it in the Case Study?

In this context, AI use refers to the use of any AI tools during the research phase, to obtain information and content, and in the final preparation of the CertBALM® Case Study submission.

AI tools can, but are not limited to, undertake tasks such as the following:

  • Answering questions.

  • Analysing, improving and summarising text.

  • Researching.

  • Translating text from one language to another.

  • Generating new ideas, prompts or suggestions for a given topic or theme.

  • Generating text with a specific tone, sentiment or format.

  • Checking and revising spelling and grammar.

  • Suggesting how to structure responses.

  • Creating images.

Use of AI tools in any form and for any reason, be that research, collating information, rewriting your own wording etc, is not acceptable and constitutes malpractice. As would be expected, your submission must represent entirely your own work and not the work of others. This includes the use of AI to generate, format or check content.

3. AI Tools

The use of any AI tool is forbidden during the writing of the CertBALM® Case Study. These tools include, but are not limited to:

  • ChatGPT

  • Claude

  • Jenni AI

  • Jasper AI

  • Writesonic

  • BloomAi

  • Microsoft Co-Pilot

  • Google Gemini

  • QuillBot

  • Grammarly

  • Perplexity AI

  • Embedded software in work laptops

4. What is AI misuse?

Students must submit work that represents entirely their own independent thoughts and ideas. This means that the final Case Study must be in the student’s own words and not from another source, person or generated by any AI tool. The content must demonstrate the student’s own application of learning of the CertBALM® course material and provide evidence of their knowledge and understanding of all the content they have learnt throughout the course. Any use of AI will be interpreted by ALMA as failing to demonstrate such knowledge and understanding independently and will be considered as malpractice, resulting in disqualification.

Examples of AI misuse include, but are not limited to:

  • The use of AI Chatbots which generate text in response to prompts and questions, improve and summarise text, write computer code, translate from one language to another, generate new ideas, prompts or suggestions or generate text.

  • Copying or paraphrasing sections of AI-generated content so that the work is no longer the student’s own.

  • Using AI for research or information gathering.

  • Using AI to complete parts of the assessment meaning that the work does not reflect the student’s own work, analysis, evaluation, calculation or style of writing.

  • Plagiarism - using content as your own words without proper acknowledgement.

  • Collusion – for example using AI to write or summarise another person’s work.

5. Identifying misuse

All submissions are reviewed thoroughly and any suggestion of AI use by students will be identified. ALMA uses software that is used widely in education to identify AI use and also plagiarism. In addition, assessment markers are trained in identifying the typical features of AI generated content. ALMA adopts a zero-tolerance policy on AI use and any misuse will result in disqualification.

6. Proof of work

It is the student’s responsibility to retain every version of their work as evidence, in case any AI is detected when their submission has been checked. Where AI use has been indicated by checks it will be the student’s responsibility to provide evidence that AI has not been used. As a result, students must keep all notes, research and drafts which ALMA might request during the marking process.

7. Penalties

ALMA has a zero-tolerance policy on AI and plagiarism generally. Any use of AI which is found within a Case Study submission will result in disqualification and offending students will be required to retake the Case Study with a future cohort. If a student is disqualified three times in the Case Study, they will automatically lose the right to complete the CertBALM® and ALMA reserves the right to notify both the student and their employer of the decision. The decision of the ALMA Education Director in relation to AI will be final.
